Where: El Vez at Sansom & 13th St, Philadelphia, PA

Price: $19 for 3 tacos

Fish: Sea bass

Extras: sweet potato purée, grilled scallions, fried jalapeños

Review: Like its sister restaurant, El Rey, El Vez knows Mexican food. Boy, do they know Mexican food. These tacos are a little more nuevo Mexicano versus El Rey’s traditional flavor palates, but both are superb.

The tortillas were fresh, the fish was cooked to perfection (and pretty big portions, too…though still small enough to fit in the tortilla, which is the mark of a really good taco). I was surprised how well I liked the addition of the sweet potato purée…I thought for sure that would be a bad idea, but combined with the single fried jalapeño and the fish, it created a really pleasant and well-rounded experience in every bite.

El Rey is still the reigning champ in my mind for Philadelphia, but El Vez is definitely giving them a run for their money.
