Where: Ponche Taqueria (Hell’s Kitchen)
Fish: mahi-mahi, shrimp
Price: $14.95 for 3 tacos
Extras:
- On the mahi-mahi: homemade pickled cabbage, chipotle remoulade sauce
- On the shrimp: guajillo pepper sauce, black beans, guacamole
Review: The mahi-mahi was SLATHERED with the remoulade. Like, I don’t know where the fish actually was because there was so much sauce. And of course, I’m not a fan of the creamy sauces when it comes to fish tacos to begin with…and this was definitely not the best way to win me over. The shrimp was actually really good, though, which made me regret getting 2 pescado and 1 camarones.
My friend who I was in town visiting also agreed with my pescado assessment, but her other tacos were the carnitas borrachas, which she liked very much. So maybe if they hadn’t gone crazy on the sauce, I would have liked it better; who knows? I chose the place because it made several lists of the top places in NYC to get fish tacos. No bueno, New York; I beg to differ.
Rating: 2 out of 5 chickens (I would have given it a 1, but the shrimp was decent)
